What is motivation ?

 

An assiduous effort, to do a task or role for desired goal, governed by external and internal factors.

 

Motive and Motivation

 

The word motivation is derived from ‘motive’ which is defined as causing a person to act in a certain way to fulfill his needs or desire. All motives are aimed at goals, needs and desires to affect or change the behavior of a person, which becomes goal oriented.

 

Motivation – misconception

 

How many times we listened that, I was motivated by someone or he/she has motivated me. People often misunderstand with the word “Motivation”. In fact, we can’t motivate people. What we can do is, we inspire people, through which people can motivate themselves, because motivation is an action. We can’t act for somebody; they have to act for themselves. But, inspiration is thinking. When thinking changes, it starts reflecting in behavior, which is more lasting and permanent, and that a what people needed.

 

Why do people or employees get de-motivated?

 

Human beings typically expect their life should be peaceful, enjoyable, secured and socially respectful, When their expectations are not met according to their desire, they feel de-motivated. When there is lack of inspiration from leaders and managers, there is dullness in the job and you feel bored doing the job, You may find it difficult to keep yourself motivated. Occasionally, it may happen that you are anticipating a reward or recognition after putting extraordinary efforts in particular project and completed the task suc- cessfully, But, management did not give you any recognition, instead somebody else is felicitated. In this situation, you may feel mortified and extremely de-motivated.

 

Some of the major causes for de-motivations are given below :-

 

  • Lack of appreciation
  • Setting wrong goals
  • Due to heavy work load
  • Unfair practices that favor one worker over another
  • No new opportunities
  • Feeling undervalued
  • Fear of job security
  • Lack of decision making power
  • Lack of interesting and challenging work
  • Lack of career vision
  • Living conditions
  • Loneliness
  • Not knowing what to do next
  • Financial situations
  • Miscommunication
  • Lack of clarity in work

 

Positive motivation – a key role to be played by managers

 

In order to improve the performance standards, team spirit and co-operation in the organization, employ- ees must get proper recognition and appreciation by managers and leaders. Motivation plays a crucial role in employee productivity and quality. When employees lack motivation, these factors are affected to a great extent. So, a positive and motiveated environment at the workplace is important to keep employees inspired and stimulated. Positive motivation mitigates the employee attrition.

 

The managers and leaders can consider doing the following:-

 

  • Listening and getting involved
  • Promoting teamwork
  • Praising and encouraging good work
  • Giving correct information
  • Allowing subordinates in decision making
  • Delegating authority and responsibility
  • Appreciate and acknowledge
  • Show sincere interest and extend help whenever

 

Types of motivation – Extrinsic vs. Intrinsic

 

Extrinsic Motivation : Extrinsic motivations are motivations that come from outside of the individual, and often involve rewards such as medals, trophies, money, social recognition and appreciation. Money is the most important encouragement for positive behavior since money can be utilized for possessing many things. Contesting in sports and winning it, is extrinsic because it is rewarded with medals and trophies, besides public encouragement.

 

Intrinsic Motivation : Intrinsic motivation is a motivation that comes from within the individual, such as winning a chess game. Intrinsic motivation is – you, yourself want for yourself. Doing social service is self- satisfication, comes out of intrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation refers to motivation that is driven by an interest or enjoyment in the task itself, and exists within the individual rather than relying on any external pressure. Intrinsic motivation is based on having enjoyment in any activity, habit or pastime. Intrinsic motivation is what you can’t give and deliver to anyone, but yourself.

 

Student – Motivation vs. De-motivation

 

Not only the under achievement students, even students who are fundamentally strong in the academics, often get de-motivated because of various reasons. The main reason is apparently lack of ethical educa- tion structure and non-committal by the respective governments, which often plays with student’s career by changing rules with dogmatic approach and proposals, The other reasons are imparting students with fragmented academic syllabus by regional educational boards, and lukewarm response by the national apex educational bodies in making uniformed syllabus code, for the whole nation. Student de-motivation caused mostly because of other following points:-

 

  • When the calss is not suitable for their needs and interests
  • The teacher’s lack of enthusiasm on course and material
  • Using old fashioned teaching materials by teachers
  • Poor concentration of students in class due to lack of interest
  • Not believing in his/her own capabilities
  • Fear of getting low grades
  • Unwilling to cooperate and distraction of other students
  • Inadequate school facilities
  • Reduced self-confidence
  • Negative attitude towards life and career
  • Lack of self-awareness
  • Not able to get inspired through social observance

 

There are so many other factors that cause student de-motivation, apart from the above mentioned points, and it’s the student who can motivate himself to achieve desired results in academics, in order to succeed in his career. The teacher’s role is very crucial in inspiring the students. A conducive environment between a teacher and the student should be highly helpful for students to achieve good results.

 

Teacher’s role – Students Motivation

 

Students knowingly or unknowingly emulate the qualities from their teachers. The teacher is a backbone for education system in any society. Teaching is not just a job, but an honest and pious profession, which is very instrumental in developing student’s academic growth and laying strong foundation with ethical education, to be useful for the society, whatever the student’s profession would be. The teachers should get motivated themselves, while establishing authentic learning framework to make them professionals in their respective fields and passions.

 

Teaching is an exceptionally rewarding and stressful profession. Many times, if gets difficult for teachers to control their cool amidst incessant stress, worries and frustration. Patience is a desirable quality for a teacher. In order to overcome the stress, a teacher should try to maintain well balanced positive amblance in a classroom, It is an important duty of the teacher, to guide the students to get rid of shackles of igno- rance and churning out the true knowledge. Teaching profession is an opportunity to contribute to the upbringing of a responsible and disciplined society. Teachers have the immense responsibility of moulding a student’s character, irrespective of the conditions prevalent in the present educational system. Only motivated teachers can create motivated students.

 

A good teacher motivates himself first, before he inspires the students to get students motivated themselves, with his impeccable personality. Every teacher should feel that the teaching profession is a priceless gift and they should keep it intact in the niche of noble profession.
