EMPATHY – AN EXCELLENT TRAIT OF EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE

There was man namely Sai Ram, who was working at Infosys as a project leader, One day, he was coming from Bangalore to Hyderabad to attend his bosom friend’s marriage at HITEC city, which was scheduled to be solemnized at 8.45p.m. It was 7.30p.m when he alighted the train at Hyderabad and rushing towards his car, where the driver was waiting for him. As he was hurriedly moving through tumultuous gathering of people, with his luggage in one hand and rolled news paper in other, unknowingly his news paper caused the food plate of the old women fallen down, who is having her dinner by sitting at pillar-post-seats. As the old women who seemed to be octogenarian, wearing glasses with whole lot of wrinkles contrast gathered around her face, looked innocuously at Sai Ram – by perceiving what had just happened, he put his luggage on the ground and went to her compassionately and explained her – “it was because of me the food fallen down”. She didn’t say anything and put her hand on Sai Ram’s head gently, showing complete affection and laughed like a six months old baby, as she did not have any teeth. Then she asked Sai Ram, “Where are you going and why you are so hurry?” He told her that he was going to attend his friend’s marriage.

While Sai Ram was sitting calmly beside her, she said “go attend your friend’s marriage” and also said “never worry about my food”. Then Sai Ram asked her, “Are you alone?” Sai Ram asked her. She said, “my son dropped me here and left for office as he is a night security guard and she continued – I came here to see my grand children – I saw them and spent some memorable time with them and now I am going back to my place – She also said, the food that fallen down was made by her daughter-in-law for dinner”. All this time, she was very happy explaining about the time she had spent with her son and grand children and looked so complacent and not a single sign of worry about the food. Then, Sai Ram went to adjacent IRCTC restaurant and brought some food. He asked her to have the dinner, as the food meant for her dinner had fallen down, She was reluctant initially, but as he insisted, she had her dinner, while Sai Ram also joined her finishing his dinner.

After five minutes, the train came and Sai Ram helped her up to her seat and said sorry again, for what had been happened. She again said, “Never worry about that and put her hand on Sai Ram head and chuckled”. That was an important situation, Sai Ram felt in his life. As Sai Ram was leaving her, she looked at him the way a mother looks at her son while departing. He was not in a hurry any more, as he reached the marriage hall and sneaked inside and stood behind his bosom friend, while the bridegroom was busy getting photographed with others. Whenever, he goes to railway station, It became a habit to him to look at pillar-post-seat, where he shared his dinner with the old women, who Sai Ram treats her as his mother.
